You did it. You booked your Brazilian wax, you showed up, and you walked out feeling smooth, fresh, and a little more confident than when you walked in. Now what?
The truth is, what you do after your wax is just as important as the wax itself. Proper brazilian wax aftercare keeps your skin calm, prevents ingrown hairs, and extends the life of your smooth results — so you get more out of every appointment and feel your best between visits.
At Bare Waxing Center & Bare Luxury Day Spa in Tallahassee, we've been helping women, college students, and professionals embrace their smoothest selves for over a decade. Here's our complete aftercare guide, built around the same framework our estheticians use in-house: THE BARE 5™ — Clean, Prep, Treat, Hydrate, and Protect. Why Brazilian Wax Aftercare Matters
When you wax, hair is removed from the root — which means your follicles are freshly open and your skin is temporarily more sensitive. Without the right aftercare, you risk irritation, redness, bumps, and ingrown hairs. With the right routine, your skin stays smooth, soothed, and glowing for weeks.
Good aftercare also means your next wax is easier. When skin is healthy and hair grows back evenly, waxing sessions are faster and more comfortable — which is exactly what we want for you. Deciding between methods? Read our guide on sugaring vs. waxing to see which is right for your skin.
The First 24 Hours — What to Do (and What to Avoid)
The first 24 hours after your Brazilian wax are the most critical. Your pores are open, your skin is adjusting, and a little extra care goes a long way.
✓ Do: Keep It Clean and Cool
- • Gently cleanse with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. No scrubbing.
- • Wear loose, breathable clothing — cotton underwear and relaxed bottoms.
- • Stay cool. Avoid intense activity for the rest of the day.
✗ Don't: Heat, Sweat, or Friction
- • No hot baths, hot tubs, or saunas
- • No workouts or heavy sweating
- • No tight clothing or synthetic fabrics
- • No sexual activity (friction + bacteria)
- • No swimming pools or oceans (chlorine/salt too harsh)
Days 2–7: Hydrate, Protect, and Let Your Skin Breathe
After the first 24 hours, your skin will start to feel more like itself. Redness and sensitivity should subside within a few hours to a day. Now the focus shifts to keeping skin hydrated and starting your ingrown-hair prevention routine.
- Moisturize daily with a lightweight, fragrance-free lotion or a product formulated for waxed skin. Hydrated skin is flexible skin — and flexible skin lets hair grow through the surface instead of curling back under.
- Begin gentle exfoliation starting 2–3 days after your wax, 2–3 times per week. Use a gentle exfoliating glove or a mild chemical exfoliant (like salicylic or glycolic acid). Avoid harsh scrubs.
- Continue wearing breathable fabrics — especially if you're active or sitting for long periods (hello, exam week).
- Drink water. Hydrated skin starts from the inside out. Aim for your daily water intake and your skin will thank you.
Bare's Signature Framework
The BARE 5™ Aftercare Framework
At Bare, we believe great skin follows a system. That's why every aftercare recommendation we make fits into THE BARE 5™ — our signature framework for smooth, healthy, confident skin.
CLEAN
Start with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Cleanse the waxed area once or twice daily with lukewarm water — never hot. This is the foundation everything else builds on.
PREP
Maintain a consistent exfoliation routine starting 2–3 days after your wax, 2–3 times per week. This removes dead skin cells that can trap hair beneath the surface — the #1 cause of ingrown hairs.
TREAT
If you're prone to ingrowns or irritation, treat the area with a targeted serum or spot treatment. Look for salicylic acid, tea tree oil, or soothing botanicals. Talk to your Bare esthetician for personalized recommendations.
HYDRATE
Moisturize daily with a lightweight, fragrance-free lotion or specialized post-wax hydrator. Well-hydrated skin stays soft and flexible, helping new hair grow through the surface cleanly. Don't forget to drink water too.
PROTECT
Protect your skin from friction, bacteria, and UV exposure. Wear breathable cotton underwear. Avoid tight gear for the first day. Apply SPF to any exposed waxed area. And avoid touching with unwashed hands.
How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs After a Brazilian Wax
Ingrown hairs are the most common post-wax concern, and the good news is they're largely preventable with the right routine.
Exfoliate regularly
2–3 times per week, starting 2–3 days after your wax. Gentle physical or chemical exfoliation keeps dead skin from trapping hair.
Keep skin moisturized
Dry, tight skin is more likely to trap hair beneath the surface. Hydrate daily.
Avoid tight clothing
Friction pushes hair back into the follicle. Choose breathable, loose-fitting bottoms and cotton underwear.
Don't pick or squeeze
If an ingrown does appear, resist the urge. It can cause scarring and infection. Apply a warm compress and a targeted treatment serum instead.
Stay on schedule
Regular waxing every 4–5 weeks trains hair to grow back finer and more evenly, reducing ingrowns over time.
How Often Should You Get a Brazilian Wax?
For most clients, the sweet spot is every 4 to 5 weeks. This gives hair enough time to grow to the ideal length for waxing (about 1/4 inch) while keeping your skin on a consistent, healthy cycle.
Regular waxing comes with real benefits: hair grows back finer and softer, sessions get faster and more comfortable, and you maintain consistently smooth skin with fewer ingrowns.

Common Aftercare Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
Shaving between waxes.
Even once. Shaving disrupts the hair growth cycle and makes your next wax more painful and less effective. Commit fully — your skin will thank you.
Skipping exfoliation.
It's the #1 reason ingrown hairs happen. A simple 2–3 times per week routine keeps skin clear and hair growing in the right direction.
Using harsh products.
Fragrance-heavy lotions, alcohol-based toners, and aggressive scrubs all irritate freshly waxed skin. Stick with gentle, fragrance-free, purpose-built products.
Waiting too long between waxes.
If you go 6, 8, or 10 weeks between appointments, hair grows back thicker and the cycle resets. Stay on a 4–5 week schedule for consistent results.
Touching the area with dirty hands.
It's tempting to check, but bacteria from your hands can cause breakouts and irritation. Keep hands off for the first 24 hours.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does redness last after a Brazilian wax?
Mild redness is normal and usually fades within a few hours. Some clients with more sensitive skin may see slight pinkness for up to 24 hours. If redness persists beyond a day or is accompanied by swelling or pain, contact your esthetician.
Can I work out after a Brazilian wax?
We recommend waiting 24 hours. Sweat and friction can irritate freshly waxed skin and increase the risk of bumps and breakouts. After 24 hours, you're good to go.
When can I exfoliate after a wax?
Start gentle exfoliation 2–3 days after your wax, then continue 2–3 times per week. Avoid exfoliating on the same day as your appointment.
Can I get a spray tan after a Brazilian wax?
Yes! Wait at least 24 hours after your wax so your skin has calmed down and the tan applies evenly. Pairing a Brazilian with a spray tan is one of our favorite confidence combos.
Is it normal to get bumps after a Brazilian wax?
Small, mild bumps can happen as hair follicles react to being emptied. They typically fade within a day. Persistent bumps or ingrown hairs are a sign to adjust your aftercare routine — and we're happy to help you troubleshoot at your next visit.
Can I wax while on my period?
Absolutely. Just let your esthetician know when you book, and use a tampon or menstrual cup during your appointment. Skin can be slightly more sensitive during your cycle, but waxing is completely safe.
