Every single day, someone walks into Bare Waxing Center for their first Brazilian wax — nervous, curious, and not quite sure what they've signed up for. And almost every single time, they walk out saying the same thing: “That was so much easier than I expected.”
We've been helping women in Tallahassee feel confident and smooth for over a decade. We've heard every fear, answered every nervous question, and guided thousands of first-timers through an experience they were dreading — and genuinely loved.
Here's our honest, complete guide to getting your first Brazilian wax: what to do beforehand, what to expect during, and how to take care of your skin after. After your wax, check out our complete aftercare guide to keep your skin smooth and bump-free.
Let's Be Honest About the Discomfort
Yes — a Brazilian wax involves some discomfort. We're not going to pretend otherwise.
But here's what we know from doing thousands of these: it's almost always far less uncomfortable than clients imagine it will be. The buildup in your head is usually worse than the wax itself. The areas that feel most sensitive tend to be over in a matter of seconds.
And it gets easier every time. Regular waxing trains your hair follicles — hair grows back finer, releases more easily, and sessions get noticeably quicker and more comfortable with each appointment. Most clients who are nervous before their first Brazilian are regulars within two visits.
What helps
Breathing steadily, staying relaxed (tense muscles make it more uncomfortable), and trusting your specialist. Our team is trained specifically to keep first-timers at ease, explain each step, and let you control the pace.
Before Your Appointment
How to Prepare for Your First Brazilian Wax
A few simple steps before your appointment will make the whole experience smoother — for you and your specialist.
Check your hair length
This is the most common reason first-timers have to reschedule. Hair needs to be about 1/4 inch long — roughly the length of a grain of rice. If you've shaved recently, wait at least 2–3 weeks. If it's been a while, don't trim — just come in and let your specialist assess it.
Exfoliate the night before
A gentle exfoliation 24 hours before your appointment helps remove dead skin buildup and makes it easier for the wax to grip hair cleanly. Use a gentle exfoliating glove or mild scrub — nothing too harsh.
Shower beforehand
Clean skin is a must. A warm (not hot) shower before your appointment helps open follicles slightly and removes any product buildup. Skip the heavy lotions or oils on the day of — they can prevent wax from gripping properly.
Wear comfortable, loose clothing
You'll want something easy to change into and easy to wear afterward. Think loose bottoms — joggers, a skirt, or a flowy dress. Save the tight jeans for another day.
Take a pain reliever if you'd like
If you're particularly anxious about discomfort, taking an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen about 30–45 minutes before your appointment can take the edge off. It's entirely optional — most clients don't need it.
Breathe
Seriously — being tense makes the experience more uncomfortable. Our specialists are trained to keep you at ease, explain every step, and let you control the pace. You're in good hands.
What Actually Happens During a Brazilian Wax
Knowing what to expect takes most of the nerves out of it. Here's a straightforward walkthrough of what happens when you arrive at Bare for your first Brazilian.
Check-in
You'll be greeted at the front desk. If this is your first visit, you'll complete a quick intake form so your specialist knows your skin type and any sensitivities.
Into the treatment room
Your specialist will show you to a private, clean treatment room. They'll step out while you undress from the waist down and get comfortable on the treatment table with a draping sheet.
Your specialist assesses and explains
Before starting, they'll check hair length, ask about your goals (how much you'd like removed), and explain the process. There's no rush. Ask everything you want to know.
The wax itself
Your specialist applies our organic wax in small sections and removes it quickly and precisely. They'll ask you to help hold skin taut in some areas — which actually makes it easier and less uncomfortable. The entire process typically takes 20–30 minutes for a first appointment.
Finishing and aftercare guidance
After waxing, your specialist will apply a soothing post-wax product and walk you through exactly how to care for your skin over the next 24–48 hours. You'll leave knowing what to do and what to avoid.
What to Avoid for the First 24 Hours
Your skin is temporarily more sensitive after a wax — follicles are open and the surface needs a little recovery time. The first 24 hours matter a lot.
Hot baths, hot tubs, or saunas
Working out or heavy sweating
Tight clothing (especially synthetic fabrics)
Swimming pools or the ocean
Scented body lotions or perfumes on the area
Touching the area with unwashed hands

FAQs
First Brazilian Wax Questions
How much does a first Brazilian wax cost at Bare?
Your first Brazilian wax at Bare is $35 for all first-time clients. FSU, FAMU, TSC, and TCC students with a valid student ID also get $35 (August 1 – October 31, 2026), and student pricing cannot be combined with other offers. How long should my hair be for a Brazilian wax?
About 1/4 inch — roughly the length of a grain of rice. If you've shaved recently, wait at least 2–3 weeks before your first appointment. Longer is actually easier to work with than too short. If you're unsure, skip the shave and let your specialist take a look.
Will my first Brazilian wax hurt?
There will be some discomfort — but it's almost always far less than people expect. Most first-timers are genuinely surprised. The good news: it gets easier every time. Regular waxing conditions your hair follicles so each subsequent session is quicker and more comfortable. Our specialists are trained to make the experience as smooth as possible — literally and figuratively.
How long does a first Brazilian wax take?
Usually 20–30 minutes for a first-timer. Once you're on a regular schedule, appointments typically take 15–20 minutes. Our specialists are skilled and efficient — you won't be there all day.
What should I wear to my Brazilian wax appointment?
Comfortable, loose-fitting bottoms and underwear you don't mind changing out of. Skip the tight jeans or leggings — you'll want something easy to put back on and breathable for the rest of your day. Cotton is your best friend.
Can I get a Brazilian wax on my period?
Yes, absolutely. Just wear a tampon or menstrual cup during your appointment and let your esthetician know when you book. Your skin may be slightly more sensitive, but waxing is completely safe during your period.
What's the difference between a Brazilian and a bikini wax?
A bikini wax removes hair along the bikini line — what shows outside a swimsuit. A Brazilian removes most or all hair from the front, sides, and back. At Bare, we'll walk you through your options and let you choose exactly how much you'd like removed — there's no pressure and no judgment.
